Sand

Lying on the sand.

He had been lying there so long that he no longer understood time.  Focusing on each minute orb, he watched them rise and magnify until they were no longer tiny.  One small grain seemed to speak to him with its shape, a thin brown line running along its edge.  For a moment his eyes lost focus as the grain grew, a dribble of sweat creeping along his eyelid and out to the end of his lashes.  It hung there, stretching and pulling, like a diver on a high board waiting to plunge to the dustiness below.
